2019 NOV DEC JAN

Summary - 161019 -
Temperature: Above normal most likely. Most models suggest above normal temperatures for the three months (and mostly each month) with only BoM and Moscow suggesting colder and even these have some N or SE parts of UK near normal. There is a hint that the S and E has the higher probs for above normal and the N and W nearer normal.
Precipitation: Fairly good agreemrnt for above normal, especially in West (could be NW and/or SW and incluides Eire) but perhaps normal in East. Month to month detail as usual is more varied but only a minority pick out any month as being drier than average although a number of near normal months are suggested and differences occur as to which could be the wettest month.
Pressure: signal for below average pressure across the north and average or above in or to the south, hence windier than average.
Windier than average.

NCEP Mean of 40 runs over preceding 10 days. 100KM resolution output. Anomalies wrt 1999-2010 hindcast climatology. (Normal is +/-0.5C from model hindcast mean).

TEMP:
Nov: Main strong cluster is about 1 deg above normal (1981-2010) with a 30% cluster of solutions near normal. About 75% of solutions show above average anomalies.
Season: Only a small number of solutions below average (UKMO says 5% prob, enhanced probs for well above average). Main clusters are at 0.5 1.0 and 1.5C positive anomalies.
PPN:
Nov: Main cluster of solutions is around normal but with slightly more solutions favouring above average than below average. (UKMO say similar probs above or below normal).
Season: About a 70/30 split in favour of above average precipiation with two clusters above normal. (UKMO says above average more likely with enhanced probs for well above.)

Summary - 161019 - Temperature: Above normal for the season but a hint that December could be nearer average perhaos slighly below in the east but with milder than average months to follow. Precipitation: Parts of the E of the UK may see near normal totals but elsewhere the main theme is for above normal precipitation. Snowfall probably below normal for low lying areas but over high ground in the north above normal precip could mean increased mountain snow. Windier than average.

NOTEs:
1. NORMAL=typically the model normal based on historic runs rather than the measured normal from observation - hence trends rather than numbers are a better guide.
2. CFS2 monthly and seasonal anomalies hindcast period 1982-2010.
3. CFS2 weekly anomalies are with respect to the lead dependent model climatology from the hindcast period (1999-2010) without any adjustment - a very warm decade!.
4. UKMET The hindcast period used for model normal is 1996 to 2009. 42-member ensemble seasonal forecast (120KM res over land) combining and bias correcting all forecast members available prior to issue.
5. JMA updated hindcast period 1981-2010
6. NOAA GFDL FLOR; 50KM resolution - Forecastoriented Low Ocean Resolution version of CM2.5, substitutes 1degree ocean for the 0.25degree.
7. NMME data, please see the BAMS article (Kirtman et al. 2014). The NMME project and data disseminating is supported by NOAA, NSF, NASA and DOE with the help of NCEP, IRI and NCAR personnel in creating, updating and maintaining the NMME archive.
